Maximising groundwater value through innovation and technology - the power of membranes

The SADC region has vast potential to alleviate water scarcity and promote growth through the responsible development of groundwater resources. To achieve this, it is crucial to understand the resource’s value, implement sustainable abstraction programs, protect its quality, optimize its usage for regional development, and implement innovative aquifer management programs, including artificial recharge. Greenchain Group is a water treatment company that recognizes the value of water and strategically deploys its expertise to maximize the potential of each drop.

Groundwater Quality And Potability

The quality of groundwater is, in part, controlled by the character of the rock in which it is stored and the water - rock contact time. Rainfall (or recharge) is also a contributing factor as the mineralisation of groundwater increases from east to west across South Africa. It is well established that groundwater is more mineralised than surface water, and with most of South Africa's domestic supplies being sourced from dams, municipal water supplies are generally of low salinity.

GIS-Based Modeling Land-Use And Climate Variability Impacts On Groundwater Quality: Cape Flats Aquifer, South Africa

Assessment of aquifer vulnerability to contamination is receiving renewed attention due to recent extreme events as demand for groundwater as alternative sources of water supply intensifies. In this study, GIS-based modeling of the impact of land-based activities and climate variability is employed to quantify the risk to quality deterioration of groundwater resource, delineate potential areas and highlight degree of vulnerability in the Cape Flats aquifer. The study used Scenariorcp85 CMIP5 AR5 climate change datasets downscaled from GCM using WaterWorld model.

Water Quality Assessment And Water Use Practices Of Groundwater In Vhembe District, South Africa.

Groundwater is often used as an alternative source of drinking water in many places of the world mostly in rural areas. There is a perceived claim that groundwater is clean and safe. This study was carried out to assess the quality of various groundwater sources in the Vhembe District of South Africa. Questionnaires were distributed to residents of the area to evaluate the water use practices. Water quality indices were employed to estimate the usefulness of the groundwater water resources. Heavy metals and major ions were analysed using ICP-MS. E.

Hydrocarbon groundwater analyses: a Karoo case study

The South African government is considering shale gas extraction in the Karoo basin, South Africa. To protect groundwater resources, there is an urgent need to do a groundwater baseline in possible gas extraction areas. Various groundwater samples have therefore been taken at a borehole and 2 soekor wells in the Northern Cape, from 2016 to 2021. The groundwater samples were analysed for dissolved gasses, specifically focussing on methane. As laboratories became more efficient ethane was also included in later analyses.
