Researching Fracking in the Karoo: Summary of lessons learned

Research on Fracking in the Karoo basin yielded results that, if not considered “unexpected”, can be considered as “should have been foreseen”. Some aspects substantially impacting research on fracking are often overlooked when undertaking scientific research on an emotional topic such as fracking. This presentation aims to provide insights and recommendations based on the experiences and outcomes of current research on hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” in the Karoo basin of South Africa. Fracking has been a subject of significant research and debate over the past decade.

Modelling Of Impacts Of Fracking On The Karoo Groundwater Systems

POSTER Hydraulic fracturing, also known as hydrofracking or fracking, is being engaged in the Karoo region of South Africa in order to enhance energy supplies and improve the economic sector. It will also lead to independence in terms of reduced amount of imports for fuel due to an estimated 13.7 trillion cubic metres of technically recoverable shale-gas reserves in South Africa. 

A Baseline Study of Scarce Groundwater Resources in Anticipation of Fracking in the Karoo

The anticipated exploration and exploitation of Shale Gas in the Eastern Cape Karoo through hydraulic fracturing has raised considerable debate regarding the benefits and risks associated with this process for both the Karoo, and the country as a whole. Major concerns include the potential impact of hydraulic fracturing on ecological, environmental and especially scarce water resources. The Eastern Cape Karoo region is a water stressed area and with further climate change it will become increasingly so.

Possible Wastewater Volumes Associated With Unconventional Oil And Gas Extraction In South Africa And The Management Thereof

Several oil and gas companies have applied for licenses to extract unconventional oil and gas (UOG) resources in South Africa (SA) through a process known as hydraulic fracturing or fracking. The South African government is in the process of drafting regulations and procedures to allow the extraction of these resources. It is surmised, based on evidence from fracking examples around the world, that large volumes of wastewater may, however, potentially be generated during the extraction of these UOG resources.

A standard methodology for establishing a groundwater baseline for unconventional gas projects in South Africa did not exist at the time the current study was undertaken. The study was therefore aimed at filling this gap, specifically focusing on hydraulic fracturing and underground coal gasification (UCG) operations.

The South African government is actively pursuing unconventional oil and gas (UOG) extraction to augment energy supplies in South Africa, but it risks damaging water quality. The Department of Water Resources and Sanitation recently released regulations to protect water resources during UOG extraction for public comment.
