Spoils Handling From Coal Mines In The Waterberg Coalfield Area, Limpopo

The 11 coal-bearing zones currently being mined at Exarro's Grootegeluk mine, discard intraburden onto discard dumps. During mining operations the open pit will be backfilled with plant discards, overburden and interburden on completion of mining. The plant waste will be covered with overburden  and  topsoil.  Intraburden  spoils  consist  of  sandstone,  mudstone  and  shale  rich  in minerals such as pyrite and siderite.

Groundwater Stratification And Impact On Coal Mine Closure

To date, South Africa has mined approximately 3.2 billion tons of coal from a number of different coal reserves located in various parts of the country. A large number of the mines have reached the end of their productive life, resulting in numerous mine closures. With closures, groundwater levels have rebounded, resulting in decant of mine water into the environment.

An Acid Base Accounting study of the coal-bearing formations in the Waterberg coalfield

Coal constitutes 77% of the primary energy needs in the country, with the Waterberg Coalfield estimated to host about 40% of the remaining South African coal resources. The Karoo coals were deposited in a reduced environment that have the potential to produce sulphides within the sediments they are hosted. The sulphur content within the coal can range from 0.1 wt.% to as high as 10 wt.%. Mining generates a disturbance in the natural groundwater levels and affects the surrounding water chemistry when sulphate is produced as a result of pyrite oxidation.

Dewatering Impacts of a South African Underground Coal Mine

The University of the Free State investigated the possible dewatering of boreholes situated on the farm properties in the vicinity of an underground coal mine. The investigation consisted of three phases.
Phase one was a hydrocensus on the farm properties.
Phase two consisted of borehole yield determination by conducting pumping tests on the boreholes (where possible) identified in the hydrocensus phase.

Post Mining Aquifer Testing At A South African Coal Mine

Mining site remnants are everlasting and impact the groundwater regime on a long term scale. An integrated approach to geoscience is necessary due to the complexity of nature and the unknown relationships that must be discovered to further the understanding of impacts on the natural environment. Furthermore, groundwater resources are negatively impacted by mining activities affecting the groundwater quality and quantity. Underground coal mining can be accompanied by roof failure events.

Building Of A Gravity Lysimeter To Represent An Ash Backfilled Opencast Coal Mine.

Millions of tons of coal ash are produced across the globe, during coal combustion for power generation. South Africa relies largely on coal for electricity generation. The current disposal methods of coal ash are not sustainable, due to landfill space limitations and operational costs. One way/means of disposing of coal ash that could provide environmental and financial benefits; is to backfill opencast mines with the ash. However, a limited number of studies have been conducted to assess the feasibility of this method in South Africa.
