Understanding PFAS transport in aquifers is critical but can be highly uncertain due to unknown or variable source conditions, hydrophobic sorption to solid organic aquifer matter, ionic sorption on mineral surfaces, changing regulatory requirements, and unprecedentedly low drinking water standards.

A Baseline Study of Scarce Groundwater Resources in Anticipation of Fracking in the Karoo

The anticipated exploration and exploitation of Shale Gas in the Eastern Cape Karoo through hydraulic fracturing has raised considerable debate regarding the benefits and risks associated with this process for both the Karoo, and the country as a whole. Major concerns include the potential impact of hydraulic fracturing on ecological, environmental and especially scarce water resources. The Eastern Cape Karoo region is a water stressed area and with further climate change it will become increasingly so.

The Impact Of Domestic Wastewater Effluent On Private Wells: An Evaluation Of Contamination Fingerprinting Techniques

Households in many rural areas worldwide rely on septic tanks, simple pit latrines or other means of wastewater disposal. Many such households are not served by a piped mains water supply, but rather obtain their water supplies from local wells. Sampling studies of private wells in Ireland and elsewhere have shown many wells to be contaminated, with sources of microbial contamination known to include domestic wastewater treatment systems, as well as practices associated with intensive agricultural production.

Assessing Spatial, Temporal Depth Variation Of Groundwater Salinity Variation, Cape Flats Aquifer, South Africa

The use of specific-depth sampling technique to demonstrate groundwater quality variation different groundwater units of unconfined aquifers has not been widely published. To demonstrate the feasibility of such technique, the unconfined Cape Flats Aquifer (CFA) in Cape Town of South Africa was studied. The aquifer underlies an urbanised area which is vulnerable to contamination from industrial and agricultural activities, waste disposal sites, landfill sites, and formal and informal settlements.

Groundwater Sampling for Radioactive Elements in the Immediate Vicinity of Beaufort West: The State of the Science

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal sampling methods for the analysis of radioactive material in fractured rock aquifers. To achieve this a number of data sets were used which span a 40 year period in and around Beaufort West. Well purging requires the pumping out of stagnant water. This step is crucial as the idle well water may not be representative of the entire aquifer. This step was found to be critical in the studies analysed and had a direct impact on the results.

Groundwater Sampling: Measurement Uncertainties And Their Implications For Decision Making

The uncertainties associated with both the sampling process and laboratory analysis can contribute to the variability of the results. In most cases, it does appear that if the water samples have been analysed by an accredited laboratory, the results are acceptable. While the accreditation of analytical laboratory and therefore its credibility is very important to uphold quality and integrity, the same should be said about the sampling process.
