About this event

Message from the Conference Committee

Kwazi TwoIt is almost that time again when as groundwater community we will come together to share knowledge, new research, innovation and expand on our networks at the 17th Groundwater Conference & Exhibition hosted by the Gauteng Branch of the Groundwater Division of the Geological Society of South Africa. Due to Covid-19 outbreak and associated restrictions, this year’s Conference will follow the format of a Hybrid model, which means that we will have both physical and online components. This is mainly necessitated by possible restrictions on gatherings which is dependent on trends of the virus infections towards the time of the Conference. On the other hand, some companies and individuals might still be financially unstable to be able to attend a full conference due to strains attributed to prolonged lock-down periods. However, with challenges come new opportunities which force us to consider alternative ways of doing things, the idea of the new normal. This bodes well with our Conference Theme and sub-Themes that call for immediate action in addressing groundwater challenges and opportunities, inclusive of emerging issues such as the 4th Industrial Revolution and global pandemics. Therefore, this year the groundwater community is called upon to leave no ‘rock unturned' in operationalising groundwater-related research outcomes through an all-inclusive approach in order to achieve groundwater visibility and resilience we yearn for.

Let’s do this!

Conference Theme

GROUNDWATER: RESILIENCE & VISIBILITY
RESEARCH. INNOVATE. DEVELOP. MANAGE. PROTECT.

Research and Development through Innovation must be the new narrative that shapes the developmental trajectory and future landscape of groundwater in South Africa and the world. A paradigm shift is needed by building a value chain towards demonstration and piloting to create impact by using groundwater as a tool for transformation.
On the other hand, resilience of groundwater to climate change, drought, anthropogenic activities, global pandemics, etc. can be achieved if all levels of governance can co-operate in ensuring integrated management of the resource and related information, proper development procedures, monitoring and protection; with the main focus on local municipalities. Moreover, groundwater-related policy and governance decisions should be informed by scientific research outcomes. This will promote the development of sound strategies from a groundwater perspective; and thus resulting in groundwater visibility. Hence, this all-encompassing theme was proposed. Majola. Van Wyk. Vermaak
