Towards The Effective Management Of Groundwater Resources During Unconventional Gas Mining

Unconventional gas mining is a new and unprecedented activity in South Africa that may pose various risks to groundwater resources. According to legal experts, South Africa does not currently have the capacity to manage this activity effectively due to various lacunae that exist in the South African legislation.

Unconventional gas mining is a new and unprecedented activity in South Africa that may pose various risks to groundwater resources. According to legal experts, South Africa does not currently have the capacity to manage this activity effectively due to various lacunae that exist in the South African legislation. The possible impacts of unconventional gas mining on groundwater, as well as governance strategies that are used in countries where unconventional gas mining is performed; have been analysed and will be discussed.

An Analysis Of The Challenges For Groundwater Governance During Unconventional Gas Development In South Africa

The groundwater governance arrangements for the development of groundwater resources were analysed. The analysis highlighted gaps and barriers to overcome before unconventional gas (shale gas and coal bed methane) development can take place at an industrial scale.

Possible Wastewater Volumes Associated With Unconventional Oil And Gas Extraction In South Africa And The Management Thereof

Several oil and gas companies have applied for licenses to extract unconventional oil and gas (UOG) resources in South Africa (SA) through a process known as hydraulic fracturing or fracking. The South African government is in the process of drafting regulations and procedures to allow the extraction of these resources. It is surmised, based on evidence from fracking examples around the world, that large volumes of wastewater may, however, potentially be generated during the extraction of these UOG resources.

Establishing A Groundwater Baseline For Unconventional Gas Projects In South Africa

A standard methodology for establishing a groundwater baseline for unconventional gas projects in South Africa did not exist at the time the current study was undertaken. The study was therefore aimed at filling this gap, specifically focusing on hydraulic fracturing and underground coal gasification (UCG) operations.

FrackSA: A tool to aid in the enforcement of groundwater regulations during unconventional oil and gas extraction

South Africa is currently considering unconventional oil and gas (UOG) extraction as an additional energy resource to improve the country’s energy security. In a water-scarce country such as South Africa, which has experienced more frequent and more intense climate extremes due to climate change, the water-related impacts of UOG extraction is a concern. The South African government is however determined to proceed with UOG development as soon as regulations to protect natural resources have been drafted.

Unconventional gas development in South Africa consists of but not limited to shale gas extraction commonly known as “fracking”, Underground Coal Gasification (UCG), Coalbed Methane (CBM), to extract natural gas from geological formations is a new, rapidly expanding industry in the world and in South Africa. However, there are general concerns that these operations could have large negative impacts such as groundwater contamination.
