It was with great sadness that the GWD learned of the passing of one of its Honorary members, Prof. Frank Hodgson. Prof Hodgson was awarded the Ground Water Division of the Geological Society of South Africa Groundwater medal, as far back as 1988, for his significant contributions to the advancement of groundwater in South Africa.

The roles of the groundwater resource and the groundwater professional are highlighted at the 16th Ground Water Division Conference and Exhibition to be held in Port Elizabeth 20-23 October 2019.  The event is organised by the Eastern Cape Branch with assistance of the national executive committee and promises to expand on the very important theme in Demand, Availability and Surety within the broader them of Groundwater: The Sustainability Issue.

The current drought situation in the Cape Town and broader Western Cape areas leaves National- and Local Government no option but to invest in alternative water supply sources. Therefore, the City is planning to abstract 80 million m3 from the Cape Flats aquifer, 30 million m3 from the Atlantis aquifer and 40 million m3 from the TMG aquifer before the end of this year.
