An Updated Hydrogeology Concept Within The Kruger National Park Southern Supersite

POSTER Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) surveys were conducted in the Kruger National park (KNP) as part of a recent Water Research Commission project (titled: Surface water, groundwater and vadose zone interactions in selected pristine catchments in the Kruger National Park). The surveys were carried out in a pristine ephemeral third-order supersite catchment, namely the southern granite (Stevenson Hamilton).

Applied Geophysics To Investigate Groundwater Pollution Flow Paths Along A Fault System In An Industrial Environment

A fault system may form preferential flow paths for groundwater along fault planes. In an industrial and mining environment, such geological structures pose a geohydrological challenge when delineating and managing groundwater pollution. A geophysical investigation, employing electric resistivity tomography (ERT) and electromagnetics (EM), was conducted along a section of a graben system to improve the geological understanding, define groundwater flow paths and pollution distribution in a mining and industrial setting.

Water is integral to our economy, the health of our environment, and our survival as a species. Much of this water is accessed from surface sources, mostly rivers, which are now under increased threat due to over use and the resulting hydro-political forces. Yet, groundwater exists as a viable option in many countries facing these mounting challenges. Knowledge of our deeper groundwater systems, although increasing, is still quite limited due to our propensity to focus efforts in the lower cost, lower risk, near- surface environment.

The electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) method has become one of the most commonly used geophysical techniques to investigate the shallow subsurface, and has found wide application in geohydrological studies. The standard protocols used for 2D ERT surveying assume that the survey lines are straight; however, due to the presence of infrastructure and other surface constraints it is not always possible to conduct surveys along straight lines.
