Balancing qualitative and quantitative issues of the groundwater extraction at the drinking water production site of Velm (Central Belgium)

Recent findings allow a better insight into the interaction between two aquifers and their vulnerabilities at the groundwater extraction site of Velm, which produces drinking water for around 55,000 households. The shallow aquifer that is exploited is situated in the Formation of Hannut. This aquifer is vulnerable to pollution, especially from the agricultural lands close to the extraction site and is sensitive to natural recharge. In this case, the groundwater is captured in a basin via a naturally occurring spring flow.

The Atlantis Water Resource Management Scheme – Lessons in Resilience

The Atlantis Water Resource Management Scheme (AWRMS) has operated since the 1970s. It demonstrates cost-effective and wise water use and recycling through visionary town planning and Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR), offering water security to Atlantis’s residential and industrial sectors. For the AWRMS to succeed, it required integrating its water supply, wastewater and stormwater systems. Each of these water systems is complex and requires a multidisciplinary management approach.

Water Supply Boreholes must be Test Pumped

This past drought (summer of 2016/17) in the Western Cape has resulted in a number of boreholes “failing” and desperate farmers calling for more boreholes to be drilled. A closer look shows that many, if not most, of these boreholes were tested by the long-discredited “Maximum drawdown-yield at end of 48 hours x 60% = yield” method. A prime example was a borehole drilled and tested by the “old” method in 1983. This borehole was the main borehole supplying a stud horse farming operation.

The assumed interconnection between palaeochannels and subsurface water resources is described. This paper (poster) discusses the different methods that can be used to indicate the significance of palaeochannels into groundwater recharge. Hydraulic parameters such as permeability and transmissivity of the layer underlying the palaeochannel act as the main dependents of groundwater recharge on palaeochannels.

Drought in the Northern Cape Karoo: Lessons Learned and Options for Future Use

The western part of the Northern Cape have been dry for at least 7 years now with no rainfall or very little rainfall, while the more central part have been dry for the past 4 years with very little rainfall. The onset of iron biofouling in boreholes in and around Cape Town

Iron biofouling in boreholes drilled into the Table Mountain Group has been documented, with groundwater abstracted for the Klein Karoo Rural Water Supply Scheme and irrigation in the Koo Valley hampered by clogged boreholes, pumps and pipes. A similar phenomenon has been experienced at some boreholes drilled and operationalised by the Western Cape Government in response to the onset of the crippling drought in 2017.

Evaluating changes in groundwater storage during the 2015-2018 drought in the Western Cape using GRACE data

The frequency, intensity, and duration of droughts are increasing globally, putting severe pressure on water supply systems worldwide. The Western Cape Province suffered from a period of severe water shortages that began around January 2015 and lasted until about July 2018. During this recent drought, there was a forced reduction in water use, predominantly from the agricultural sector. Citizens also reduced water use and increasingly tapped into groundwater for their needs irrespective of whether the hydrogeology was considered favourable or not.

Aquifer Water Level Behaviour In Relation To Deluge And Drought At Eskom's Thyspunt Site, Oyster Bay, Eastern Cape

The paper presents the groundwater monitoring data collected at Eskom's Thyspunt Site over the eleven-year period from January 2008 to January 2019. The Thyspunt site is underlain by an upper unconfined intergranular aquifer of the Algoa Group sediments, called the Algoa Aquifer, and a deeper semi-confined fractured-rock aquifer of the Table Mountain Group, called the TMG Aquifer. In the Algoa Aquifer, the highest water levels were recorded after the very good winter rains of 2011 and 2012.
