This course covers a range of topics focusing on variably saturated flow in rock and soil. Research is presented by PhD candidates and academic research supervisors about field and laboratory data and the implications and applications thereof.

The vadose zone links the land surface with the groundwater table affecting groundwater recharge and quality, the properties of geological materials in engineering, and living ecosystems. The science is complex because it is subject to differences in scale from pore scale to regional scale. It affects the movement of water that changes with changing water content, and it differs across spatial and temporal dimensions. This workshop focuses on the vadose zone and on the role of unsaturated mechanics in variably saturated fractured and weathered rock, complex soils such as residuum, and saprolite, and the interface between soil and rock. The vadose zone also determines and affects urban applications such as excavations, contamination, seepage, drainage, groundwater dependent ecosystems, and land use planning.

Speakers
Duan Swart
PhD Engineering Geology near completion; Consultant at PeraGageDuan Swart is an Engineering Geologist at PeraGage. He has consulted on projects steeped with difficulties associated with residual soils in Southern and Western Africa. His MSc contributed to the knowledge of both ferroan and manganiferous dolomite residuum. He is currently a PhD student at the at University of Pretoria and he hopes one day he can be at the same calibre as his supervisors Prof. Dippenaar and Prof Van Rooy.
Prof Matthys Dippenaar
Course Leader; Associate Professor in Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology at UPMatthys Dippenaar joined the University of Pretoria in 2007 after six years in industry. He completed his MSc in 2010 and PhD in 2014 and became an associate professor in 2020. He is an engineering geologist and hydrogeologist with a research focus on vadose zone hydrology looking specifically into unsaturated flow through soil, fractured rock, the soil-rock interface, and altered and made ground. Socioeconomic and environmental considerations are part of his research, and all projects have postgraduate students.
Mampho Maoyi
PhD Engineering Geology near completion; Lecturer at UPMampho Maoyi is an early career academic researcher. The University of Pretoria appointed her in 2020, shortly after completing an MSc (cum laude) in Engineering Geology in 2019. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree focusing on the role of the unsaturated zone in fractured rock under the supervision of Prof MA Dippenaar and Prof JL van Rooy. Her research interests also stretch into the complex vadose zone, fractured rock hydrology and mechanics.
Prof. Louis van Rooy
Extraordinary Professor in Engineering Geology at UPLouis van Rooy is an extraordinary professor at the University of Pretoria He is an engineering geologist with experience in soil mechanics, engineering geology, and karst. He still supervises research projects for MSc and PhD students, covering topics such as dolomite stability, and seepage in unsaturated rock and soil masses.
Yazeed van Wyk
PhD Hydrogeology near completion; research manager at Water Research CommissionYazeed van Wyk has 13 years of professional experience in hydrogeology, specialising in environmental and artificial tracer techniques, vadose zone hydrological processes and capacity building and training through the development of water sector occupational qualifications. He joined the Water Research Commission in 2017 as a programme manager and was appointed on a full-time basis in 2020 as a research manager, responsible for managing and leading the Groundwater Hydrology portfolio.
