This study examined the effective use of the hydrogeologic conceptual model (HCM) to implement the integrated water resource management (IWRM) approach. While research focuses on using hydrogeologic models  in  groundwater  for  planning,  few  studies  show  how  to  use  HCM  for  a successful IWRM approach, especially in  resource  poor  catchments.  This  is  largely  due  to  t he lack of adequate data to showcase such models.

There are various software packages used by hydrogeologists for a variety of purposes ranging from project management, database management, data interpretation, conceptual and numerical modelling and decision making. Software is either commercial (produced for sale) or open source (freely available to anyone and for any purpose).

The objective of this paper is to promote open source software that can be used by the hydrogeological community to reduce expenses, enhance productivity and maximise efficiency.

Understanding Natural Groundwater Recharge Systems In The Lower Berg River Catchment, West Coast, Western Cape

The CSIR has embarked on a study to investigate the potential for additional water in the West Coast, Western Cape through the application of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR). The benefits of MAR is that it may generate additional water supplies from sources that may otherwise be wasted with the recharged water stored in the aquifer to meet water supply in times of high demand. Determining recharge is the most important aspect of hydrological system. However, the accurate estimation of recharge remains one of the biggest challenges for groundwater investigators.
