Moderators: Oudi Modisha and Awodwa Magingi

This Webinar - organised by the Young Professional Committee, GWConfEx2021 - focused on the development of groundwater resources including the status of groundwater in South Africa, major technical and social challenges within the industry and ways to address these challenges.

Groundwater and surface water interdependencies in a water-scarce arid system, Sandveld, South Africa

The largely groundwater-dependent Sandveld region’s water resources have been put under severe strain due to increased agricultural and town development and recent increased interest in mineral exploration within these catchments. The area known locally as the Sandveld consists of the coastal plain along the west coast of South Africa, bordered by the Olifants River to the north and east, the Berg River to the south and the Atlantic Ocean coastline to the west. Groundwater is considered an essential source of fresh water for the town and agricultural supply.

Comparing The Influence Of Aquifer Heterogeneity On Borehole Design, Test Pump Results And Interpretations Between The Primary Cape Flats And Atlantis Aquifers Of The Western Cape, South Africa.

The recent Western Cape drought initiated large scale development of the Cape Flats Aquifer (CFA) and refurbishment of the Atlantis Water Resource Management Scheme (AWRMS). Both aquifers are comprised of primary sediments of the Sandveld Group. Lithologies and depositional environments of the two aquifers are often directly compared and linked, but recent borehole drilling in these two aquifers is highlighting their inherent differences.

A More Focused Approach To Developing Groundwater Resources In Rural Communities.

Water scarcity is a global challenge, particular in South Africa, which is a semi-arid country. Due to the continuing drought, appropriate groundwater management is of great importance. The use of groundwater has increased significantly over the years and has become a much more prominent augmentation component to the supply chain especially in rural communities. However, the approach used to develop groundwater resources, specifically in rural areas, can be improved in numinous ways to ensure drilling of successful boreholes that could meet water demands.

The Relationship Between Groundwater Governance And Management At Local Municipal Level.

The terms 'Management' and 'Governance' are used interchangeably when referring to groundwater such as policy, protection, operations, financial systems and infrastructure. Governance and management are not separate scales of action, but different processes. Both processes can take place together at local, regional, national or global scales. (Seward 2015). The influences from the different levels of government are also linked. Governance and management can in most case not be split into two blocks and handled separately.

A Practical Guide To Conserving Groundwater Underground

Conservation is most Academic Editor likely linked to the behaviour of the user to use less water and to use the water more efficiently. The actions will include fixing the leaking taps, toilets and pipes; the implementation of best practices; and awareness programs. All these activities are after the water is taken from the water resource.
