Groundwater Closure Cost Estimation For The Mining Industry

The increase in awareness of environmental issues and the desire for a cleaner environment by the public has caused mining companies to place greater emphasis on the continuous rehabilitation of harmful effects caused by mining operations. Ongoing rehabilitation is also a requirement of the government departments involved in mining in South Africa. The biggest concern for the relevant government departments is the possible uncontrolled pollution of water resources in the vicinity of mines, after they have closed.

Groundwater Asset Management In The Mining Industry

Groundwater boreholes are a key element of many mining projects, as part of dewatering and water supply  systems,  and  must  achieve  high  levels  of  operational  efficiency  and  service  availability. Outside of the mining industry, planned borefield maintenance programmes have become a key part of professional well-field management, with proven benefits in terms of operational cost savings and continuity of pumping.

Numerical Modelling Of a Coal Mine to Improve the Understanding of Mine Water Decant: A 1000-Piece Puzzle

A coal mine in South Africa had reached decant levels after mine flooding, where suspected mine water was discharging on the ground surface. Initial investigations had indicted a low-risk of decant, but when ash-backfilling was performed in the defunct underground mine, decant occurred. Ash-backfilling was immediately suspended as it was thought to have over-pressurised the system and caused decant. Contrariwise, a number of years later decant was still occurring even though ash-backfilling had been terminated.

SACNASP CPD EVENT Natural attenuation of acid mine drainage by various rocks in a typical Karoo coalfield: A case study of the Witbank, Ermelo, and Highveld coalfields, South Africa. In the Karoo coalfields, mining operations that release acid mine drainage (AMD) are threatening groundwater resources. An important parameter controlling the extent and severity of AMD impacts is the natural attenuation of rocks in response to introduced of AMD.
