With over 30 years of experience, I have worked in mining and exploration, groundwater consulting and mine de-watering. I have completed many geological projects, including gold and platinum exploration and was fortunate to be involved with the initial exploration and start-up of the ultra-deep Northam Platinum mine and the low grade/high tonnage Tarkwa Open-cast mine. Here I led a >$1 million / year diamond drilling programme at what is now a world class operation.

My groundwater consulting has exposed me to a broad spectrum of projects, including exploration and feasibility studies, developing water for urban municipalities and rural communities, developing sanitation/WASH protocols, compiling impact assessments for EIA's, assessing water quality and contamination investigations, monitoring and audits for environmental compliance and undertaking drought relief interventions etc.

Typically, my clients have included municipalities, government departments, NGO's, property developers, organised agriculture, manufacturing and industry, waste disposal contractors, renewable energy utilities and bottled water plants etc

Surina Esterhuyse is a researcher at the Centre for Environmental Management, University of the Free State (UFS). She specialises on minimising the environmental impact of unconventional oil and gas extraction on specifically groundwater resources, via regulation and other tools. She led the project on the development of the interactive vulnerability map and monitoring framework for unconventional oil and gas for the South African Water Research Commission. She was also a co-author on the Strategic Environmental Assessment on Shale Gas Development in South Africa and co-edited the book Hydraulic Fracturing in the Karoo: Critical Legal and Environmental Perspectives with Jan Glazewski.
