GWD welcomes New Committee!
Welcoming new Committee members and thanking outgoing members
The Ground Water Division (GWD) more formally welcomed its new Committee members at a recent GWD Executive Committee meeting following the announcement of the 2020 Election results at its Annual General Meeting hosted as part of the GWD 17th Biennial Conference program in October.
As a membership organization, the GWD is governed by a Committee elected by its members. We are pleased to share that several new individuals will be joining the National (MANCO) as well as the Branches (all comprising the Executive Committee). Their addition to the Committee will help to continue to position the GWD as a critical leader in the groundwater profession.
Committee members serve a 2 year term and volunteer their time and energy to directly impact our community and our organization. We thank our outgoing members and welcome new and re-elected members, and thank them for their contributions and dedication.
Dr Nicolette Vermaak. GWD National Vice-Chairperson (2019-2021). Nicolette made an incredible impact during the two terms she served as GWD Vice-Chair. Not only was she instrumental in ensuring continuity in leadership and guidance of the Executive, but she contributed much of her time and effort growing and establishing Awareness initiatives in the sector. During the 2020 Conference, Dr Vermaak, as the Science Committee Chair, developed the Conference Programme and we agree that through her efforts the Conference had been recognised as a great success. Nicolette has on many previous occasions been acknowledged as a mentor to many, an inspirational colleague and team leader - we also wish to share that she has become a dear friend to so many of us: been there in steadfast support, offering words of encouragement when needed and most of all, been there to share pleasurable moments - and great Art - as well! You will greatly be missed but sure our journey together will continue and we will have the opportunity to work together again.
Mr Yazeed van Wyk. National Treasurer (2019-2021). If you have not been a Treasurer of the GWD, you will have no idea of the time and effort it entail to keep the wheels of the Division rolling . Yazeed has served in this demanding position for the last two terms and must add, during the most challenging times since the Division reactivated in 2009. Yazeed had handled the constant fiscal demands for invoice payments, bank statements and transactional guidance with incredible diligence, positive energy and patience. He has earned and renewed our professional respect with how he managed the Division’s duties together with his demanding WRC portfolio as well as his Doctoral studies – and always with a smile and great style ;)! In addition to all the Treasurer duties on the Executive, Yazeed has always been willing to step up to guide and assist where need be: attending GWD functions and ad-hoc task team meetings, being willing to take part in press interviews and contributing content to the GWD website and newsletters. Yazeed has provided invaluable oversight and perspective to the Division through his time on the Committee, and we’re incredibly grateful for his work. You will really be missed Yazeed but we wish you much success in what lies ahead for you in the future.
