On 25 August 2022, the GWD Young Professionals hosted an event in celebration of women's month titled "Women in Hydrogeology".

The event was hosted by the ever sparkling Ms. Annalisa Vicente (GWD Young Professionals Portfolio) with the following (just as accomplished and engaging) Panelists:

Highly productive geophysical mapping of groundwater systems in water-scare countries

Groundwater is a hidden resource, so as part of making it more visible, geophysical methods can be very useful in inferring the delineation of aquifers and/or more productive zones to target in fractured rock environments. The most commonly used techniques to assist groundwater studies or exploration are still resistivity profiles or sections known as ERT or electrical resistivity tomography and vertical electrical soundings or VES. One of the limiting factors with this technique is the scale of what surveys can be conducted, resulting in, at best, some kilometers per day.

Aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) applications to enhance drinking water supply security in the Sultanate of Oman

Water scarcity has driven many countries in arid regions, such as Oman, to desalinate seawater for freshwater supply. Episodic problems with seawater quality (e.g., harmful algae), extreme weather events that affect energy supply and hence the desalination process have nurtured the urgent need to store desalinated seawater (DSW) in the aquifers for use during emergency and peak demand time.

Groundwater and surface water interdependencies in a water-scarce arid system, Sandveld, South Africa

The largely groundwater-dependent Sandveld region’s water resources have been put under severe strain due to increased agricultural and town development and recent increased interest in mineral exploration within these catchments. The area known locally as the Sandveld consists of the coastal plain along the west coast of South Africa, bordered by the Olifants River to the north and east, the Berg River to the south and the Atlantic Ocean coastline to the west. Groundwater is considered an essential source of fresh water for the town and agricultural supply.

Open-loop Groundwater Heat Pumps (GWHPs) diffusion in Italian Urban areas: Modelling for the hydrogeological constraints definition

Italian urban areas are characterized by centuries-old infrastructure: 35% of the building stock was built before 1970, and about 75% is thermally inefficient. Besides, between 60% and 80% of buildings’ energy consumption is attributed to space heating. Open-loop Groundwater Heat Pumps (GWHPs) represent one of the most suitable solutions for increasing the percentage of energy consumption from Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in cities such as Turin city (NW Italy). However, allowing the diffusion of GWHPs cannot be disregarded by the knowledge about hydrogeological urban settings.

The Structural Hydrogeology Of A Gold Mine In Mali

The occurrence of groundwater around a mined-out open pit, connected to an active underground working is not completely understood, but it is fascinating. It has been established that gold mineralisation in study area was structurally controlled. The geomorphology of the local drainage system is highly controlled by the fold or fault architecture. Surface water flowed through, and eroded open fractures in exposed damaged zones (zone of subsidiary structures surrounding a fault).

Hydrogeology Of The Kosi Bay Lakes System, South Africa

POSTER Lake Kosi Bay is an estuary-linked lake system composed of four interconnected lakes, namely Makhawulani , Mpungwini , Nhlange , Amanzamnyama and interconnecting channels, which drains via a sandy opening to the Indian ocean and three extensive areas of swamps (Wright 2002 ). The Kosi Bay lake system is considered as the most pristine lake system on the South African coast and has been used as a recreational fishing destination since 1950 (James et al. 2001).

Hydrogeology Of Cedarville Flat Primary Aquifer

POSTER The study focuses on the primary aquifer in the Cedarville flats. Groundwater extracted from the aquifer is the primary source for domestic and agricultural purposes for farmers and the community in the Cedarville area. The aim of the study is to develop a conceptual hydrogeological model of the primary aquifer in Cedarville flats which may be used as an input to a groundwater flow model that will predict the behaviour of the aquifer.
