Planning for increased water security and preventing salinisation in coastal areas of the Netherlands: A study on the suitability for managed aquifer recharge and extraction of brackish water, including quantification of potential extractable volumes

Year-round water security is at risk as socio-economic developments lead to increasing water demands, while climate change affects water availability through higher-intensity rainfall and prolonged periods of drought. Coastal zones and deltas with often high population densities experience additional risks of salinisation and land subsidence. These developments ask for creative solutions to secure sustainable and year-round access to fresh water. The subsurface provides storage capacity to actively infiltrate freshwater, bridging the time-gap between demand and supply.

Hydrogeology and hydrology are commonly overlooked aspects of geoheritage, despite strong geological links. Water in all its forms has played a critical role in the development of Earth, and the shaping of its landforms (in addition to sustaining all life on the planet), and access to water has been the core reason for the establishment of numerous human settlements.

Developing Groundwater Supplies To Supplement The Water Supply Of Ladismith, Western Cape Province

Ladismith was established in 1851 where freshwater discharge from the Klein Swartberg Mountains. Growth of the town required building of the Goewerments Dam in 1920 and the Jan F le Grange Dam in 1978. However, water demand now matches supply, and water shortages are being experienced. Poor management and recent droughts exacerbated the situation. A project was initiated to address shortcomings with the existing supply and identify additional sources of water.

Linking Geology And Wildlife Water Supply In The Hwange National Park, Kalahari Basin

Most of the 14 651 km2 Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe is on monotonous Aeolian sands of the Kalahari Basin, with endorheic drainage. The large game populations of the park are sustained by seasonal accumulations of water in grassy pan depressions and year-round supply of groundwater to pans (except in the northwest where there are rivers and dams). Some of this is from natural seeps, such as at the Shakwanki, Nehimba and Ngweshla Pans, but most are supplied from boreholes.

Groundwater as bulk water supply option to an open pit mine

A multi seam open pit coal mine is planned to be developed in the Moatize Basin of Mozambique. The proposed project includes a new coal mine and coal handling facility to produce up to six million tons per annum of coking and thermal coal for the export market, which will have a life of mine of approximately 30 years. The mine will require 65 l/s for the first five years to supplement their process water make-up. Geo Pollution Technologies Ltd was appointed to investigate the feasibility of supplying groundwater to the mine.
