Eskom Expo for Young Scientists

Each year the Centre for Water Sciences and Management at the North West University hosts the regional (Dr Kenneth Kaunda District) Eskom expo for young Scientists along with the provincial Education Department.

The Centre, which includes Sascha Roopa (Northern Branch Chair) and Thapelo Mongala (Young Professionals Chair), is involved in mentoring students on the scientific method and guiding them through their projects prior to the event, as well as the students qualifying for the national science expo.

At the event we assist with judging of projects with the assistance of young Ground Water Division Members from the Northern Branch. The GWD sponsored the prices for best Primary and Secondary School Project.

The initiative was started by Prof Ingrid and Dr Rainier Dennis in 2018, with Sascha Roopa and Thapelo Mongala now filling in as committee members. The Northern Branch hopes to, in the future, expand the amount of schools that take part, “adopt” a school in Potchefstroom to mentor, and expose young learners to the research in groundwater.

From a total of 80 projects, there were 7 gold winners and
7 projects that were chosen for the national expo.
