Groundwater workshop: Setting the standards – Borehole Drilling; Pumping Tests and Monitoring (IAH-SA)
Being in South Africa we have all be exposed to the pressures associated with drought. In drought situations, we see how it becomes mayhem with numerous short-cuts being taking, incorrect methodologies being implemented and over-inflated prices and opinions being applied and pronounced in the drought regions. As water supply engineers, hydrogeologists and scientists, we all need to learn from one another and adhere to some form of standards in the areas of borehole drilling, pumping tests, and monitoring.

11-13 November 2020, Stellenbosch University. Being in South Africa we have all be exposed to the pressures associated with drought. In drought situations, we see how it becomes mayhem with numerous short-cuts being taking, incorrect methodologies being implemented and over-inflated prices and opinions being applied and pronounced in the drought regions. As water supply engineers, hydrogeologist and scientists, we all need to learn from one another and adhere to some form of standards in the areas of borehole drilling, pumping tests and monitoring. These standards need to be applicable in both drought and non-drought times and the more we learn from one another the more we can educate those embarking on groundwater supply schemes (be it from a single domestic borehole to large scale municipal and agricultural supply). This workshop pulls together leading experts in the groundwater industry and includes a field visit to drilling within the Table Mountain Group Aquifer (TMGA). It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn and network. Although based in the Western Cape, international trends will also be discussed and the workshop is applicable to all involved in groundwater from the southern Africa region and beyond.

Event Schedule
Day 1
08:15 am - 09:00 am
The focus will be on a keynote address by Dr Roger Parsons on all the lessons he learnt from the Cape Town “Day-Zero” situation; International trends in water supply drilling; horizontal drilling for water supply; borehole drilling techniques and design when drilling in hard rock; sediments and karst aquifers; how to deal with artesian boreholes; how to drill in a back yard or basement (i.e. tight spaces) and drilling really deep boreholes.
The fast-paced day will draw to a close with a presentation on the existing standards for drilling and testing, as well as an overview of the SANS241 drinking water standard. We will close< the day with a fascinating bottled water tasting.

Day 2
09:00 am - 09:20 am
The day will open with Dr Ricky Murray giving clear guidelines on how to work with drillers and exactly the key observations required. There will be additional presentations on borehole drilling from very experienced drillers; presentations on dewatering; a lively debate on drilling standards – what’s in place currently and what should we be aiming for; followed by two case studies on the primary and fractured rock aquifers being developed to augment Cape Towns water supply.
The pace will slow a bit and we will head out to see the development of the TMGA at one of the wellfields being developed for Cape Town. We may detour quickly to see a very cool hydro-electric scheme. Then back to Stellenbosch for a delicious meal and some fine wine.

Day 3
09:20 am - 09:45 am
This will be another packed day, with the focus being on pumping tests – what is scientifically acceptable and what is not. There will be worked examples and then also an opportunity for delegates to work with software to complete pumping test analyses.
We will then move onto monitoring, focusing on what are the basic elements of monitoring; some of the new technologies available and a case study. We then going to wrap up the workshop with 2 case studies that focus on what we have discussed to date, with the one area being the Langebaan Rd Aquifer area and the second being from the extremely challenging arid Northern Cape. We plan to be done by 3 pm on Friday, leaving wiser; more connected and prepared to ensure water supply work is up to standard.
