The GWD is delighted to announce that the 2019 Field School will be hosted by our GWD Western Cape branch this year! Building on the successes of the annual Industry Field Schools (hosted in Gauteng in 2016-18) and the Honour Students' Field School (2018, hosted in Potchefstroom by the NWU)

Science is a living document; it grows and expands as more information becomes available and our knowledge grows. It makes use of hypothesis, experiments, observations, and measurements. Groundwater scientists have a difficult task. They work in a system that is not visible, and they cannot take it into a laboratory to study. They use geophysical methods and drill boreholes to get an idea of the groundwater system that they are studying.

Being in South Africa we have all be exposed to the pressures associated with drought. In drought situations, we see how it becomes mayhem with numerous short-cuts being taking, incorrect methodologies being implemented and over-inflated prices and opinions being applied and pronounced in the drought regions. As water supply engineers, hydrogeologists and scientists, we all need to learn from one another and adhere to some form of standards in the areas of borehole drilling, pumping tests, and monitoring.

This course, provided by Colin Rice, will provide newly qualified geologists that have had little or no exposure to drilling operations, with a fundamental understanding of selected aspects of a drilling operation.

Next intake: 20 September: Please note you will need to complete a course per month (including assessment), therefore this program will take approximately 9 months to complete.

Frequently, new geologists are placed on drilling projects with very little understanding of the drilling operation. In order to effectively contribute to managing the project, geologists require at least a basic level of understanding of drilling principles and the drilling operation as a whole.

Rand Water are hosting a webinar in celebration of the National Water Week from 21 – 27 March 2022. The theme for year 2022 is “Groundwater – making the invisible, visible”, The theme seeks to remind policy and decision-makers, inside and outside the water community, that South Africa is a water scarce country.

This workshop is designed as an introduction to the world of drilling. It comprises a number of modules covering all aspects of drilling and logging –everything you will need to know in order to make the best of your drilling programmes. While primarily directed at students, mentees and young graduate professionals, it can also serve as a refresher course to more experienced geoscientists.
