About this event

Groundwater Mapping Approach Demonstration Project: Ladysmith

Friday the 12 th of November 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Strategic Water Sector Cooperation (SSC) is a partnership between Denmark and South Africa that aims
to support a socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable development of the South African
water sector. One of the projects in this collaboration is to develop a South African groundwater mapping
approach based on the knowledge and experience obtained from the Danish Groundwater Mapping
Programme and the site-specific hydrogeological expertise of South African experts.
As a case study for this, The Strategic Water Sector Cooperation (SSC) hired the consultancy Rambøll to
carry out the task “Secondment of a Danish Short-Term Advisor to support Umgeni Water in developing
groundwater for water supply around Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa” to test whether
the Danish groundwater mapping approach is also applicable in South Africa.
The objective was to test and demonstrate the Danish concept on geological and hydrological modelling.
The work and results are presented and after that, there is an open discussion on the two methods’
applicability in South Africa.

1. The Ladysmith demonstration project (10 min)
Fanus Fourie, Department of water and Sanitation (DWS)

2. Ladysmith geological model (25 min)
Tillie Madsen, Danish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

3. Ladysmith groundwater model (25 min)
Jan Kürstein, Rambøll

4. Discussion on the South African methodology – Is the Danish method applicable in South Africa?
(20 min)
(Fanus as facilitator)

5. How to use the models for administrative groundwater management and integrated water
resource management in the area (10 min)
Jan Kürstein, Rambøll
