GWD Talk:Decision support groundwater modelling - in spirit or in fact? (GWD GAU)
About this event
This CPD webinar is open to members of the GWD and is aimed at planners, decision makers, water resource managers, researchers, private sector organisations, dewatering hydrogeologists, and all stakeholders who are interested in the use of numerical groundwater modelling as a decision support tool.
Join Nico van Zyl where he will share about his experiences as a groundwater modeller:
As a modeler -what is my job? To simulate what happens under the ground? Or to allow people to manage what happens under the ground in a way that prevents bad things from happening. No one can simulate what happens under the ground, but there is hope we can assimilate data and allow the flow of information to quantify uncertainty. Model-based decision-support may therefore require construction, history-matching and deployment of a number of models, each addressing different aspects of system management. Modelling is always a means; it is never an end. “Simulating a system” is not a valid end.

Topic: Invited Professional
Nico van Zyl, a self-employed consultant at Hydrogeek Consulting, has held positions at Ages and Golder. He has ten years’ experience in the hydrogeological and groundwater modelling fields and has his professional registration as an Earth Scientist (Pr. Sci. Nat). He completed his MSc. degree in Hydrogeology in 2011 at Free State. Over the past few years Nico has developed his skills in groundwater modelling primarily to aid groundwater investigations in the mining sector. He has been involved in a range of mining projects including dewatering modelling for open pit and underground mines, contaminant transport models of mine waste residue facilities and water supply modelling to aid in the sustainable development of aquifers for water supply augmentation. He has since worked in the government, private and tertiary sectors. He has worked on projects throughout South Africa, Africa (DRC, Zambia, Mozambique, Ghana and Botswana) and internationally in countries( Argentina, UAE, Peru, Australia, US and Germany).
